How to Solve the Bottomless Purse Problem with this Vintage DIY

I can never find my pack of gum in the bottomless pit I carry around called a purse.  I love gum.  But the excavating dig through receipts, random kid-stuff, pens, markers and lip-gloss makes it incredibly difficult to find my gum when I want it.

Well, I just solved my problem.

DIY Gum Holder (38)
A cute wall-hanging, mason jar plaque so that I can grab a stick of gum as I head out the door!  And it isn’t hard to make.  I even have the printable of my text to make it easy.

To Make this Hanging Mason Jar Gum Holder You Will Need:

  • A Wooden Wall Plaque
  • Mason Jar – pint size, wide mouth
  • Metal Clamp (I picked mine up at the home improvement store.  It is the clamp that goes on a dryer hose.)
  • Stain, Brush & Rag
  • White Acrylic Paint & Brush
  • Chalk, Pencil, Permanent Marker
  • White Paint Marker – Fine Point
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Fine Sanding Paper
  • Clear Spray Paint
  • Tin Snips or Pliers
  • Hammer and Nail
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver and One Screw
  • A Sawtooth Picture Hanger
  • Gum.  Lots of it!  (I used the new Extra® 35-stick pack.  More gum to go around!)

Let’s begin!

DIY Gum Holder (3)

First, brush the stain onto the wood and wipe it off with a rag.  I did this twice for a richer color.  Allow the stain to dry completely.

DIY Gum Holder (4)

If you are like me and want an aged look to the wood, you will need to white wash the wood before moving on.  To do this, mix a little white acryllic paint with water.  There is no right or wrong as to the ratio of paint to water; it is simply your preference.

DIY Gum Holder (5)

Paint the white wash mix onto the wood and wipe off.  Work in segments, otherwise the paint will dry before you can remove excess with your rag.  You can see in the picture above that the white wash is giving a beautiful worn look to the stain.

DIY Gum Holder (7)

Be sure to get the sides as well!  Set aside your wood to dry and let’s take a look at the text.

DIY Gum Holder (1)

If you want to create your own fun hand-lettering, this is your chance.  But if you’re looking for something simpler, you can download a copy of my text here:  Just A Little Something For The Road – free printable.

DIY Gum Holder (9)

Cut the text into a rectangle and place it on the board.  To help determine the placement, use the mason jar as a guide to show available space.

DIY Gum Holder (10)

Once determined, mark the four sides of your paper with chalk.

DIY Gum Holder (13)

Then, flip over your text and begin to chalk on the black letters as shown above.  We are making a guide for writing with the paint marker in a later step.

DIY Gum Holder (16)

Put your paper back in place on the wood and tape a couple edges down with painter’s tape.  Then with your pencil, trace the outline of the black letters.  You are pushing down and creating chalk lines on the wood.  Take care to stay within the black lettering.

Do this for the entire text.

DIY Gum Holder (12)

Now you have created a guide.

DIY Gum Holder (15)

Use your fine point white paint marker to outline the text.  Don’t try to fill in everything or your hands may wipe off too much of the chalk as you work.  Outline first and then go back and fill in with the paint marker.

DIY Gum Holder (17)

With fine sand paper, wear off some of the fresh paint.  How much you sand depends on your personal preference.

DIY Gum Holder (18)

And don’t forget to sand the corners of the wood.  We’re giving it a little wear.

DIY Gum Holder (19)
Seal your work with a clear coat of spray paint.  Now you’re ready for mounting the jar!

DIY Gum Holder (20)

Size your clamp to fit the jar and then cut off some of the excess metal ring.  Tin snips will work best but bending back and forth with pliers will also do the job.

DIY Gum Holder (22)

Next, mark the clamp where the screw should go with a permanent marker.  You will need to pound a nail through the metal with a hammer.

DIY Gum Holder (24)

Then, mark your hole for placement on the wood.

DIY Gum Holder (25)

Pre-drill the hole for the screw and then with a screwdriver and screw, attach the clamp to board.

DIY Gum Holder (27)

DIY Gum Holder (29)

Attach the sawtooth picture hanger to back of the wood.  Now you can put your mason jar in the clamp!

DIY Gum Holder - Extra Spearmint

All that is left is to fill the jar with gum.

I picked up Extra® Gum Spearmint and Extra® Gum Polar Ice® at CVS.  The Extra® 35-stick packs mean more gum for my whole family.  And I love the durable, recycled packaging.  Seriously, I already have ideas brewing as to what I can do with the empty gum cases!

I used about a pack and half which should last us quite awhile.  Now, we have as much gum as we want right at our fingertips.  Give extra, get extra.

DIY Gum Holder (44)

I hung my DIY gum holder on the wall next to the lockers in the mudroom.  We can all grab a piece of gum as we head out the door.

How to Make a LEGO Mini-Figure Display

LEGO Mini-Figure Display

Legos here.  Legos there.  Legos, Legos everywhere.

If your kid is into Legos, you probably know exactly what I mean.  It is one thing to organize the lot of legos, but have you counted how many mini-figures your child has?  I was dumbfounded when I saw all the little guys in one pile.

So as I was hitting the garage sales last fall, I searched high and low for something that I could turn into a Lego mini-figure display.  Maybe an old plate display rack or tea cup holder.  And that was when I found this $5 wall hanging with little shelves that would be perfect to display my son’s collection of Emmet and his friends.

It just needed a little work.

DIY Lego Mini-Figure Display - Before

(This post contains affiliate links.)

I am not sure what this display piece used to be.  There is a lip in each shelf, which leads me to think that it may have been a rack used to hang in churches with the hymn numbers on it.  Maybe?

What You’ll Need to Make a Lego Mini-Figure Display:

  • A display unit.  Find a stand or rack with little shelves.
  • Flat Legos (plates)
  • Gorilla Glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Something to weigh down the Legos once glued.  I used dominoes and a long {random} piece of metal.
  • Painting Supplies (if desired)

Let’s Get Started:

Before you do anything else and after you have your display unit, figure out what Legos you need.  My son used plates he had in his collection to count how many dots across the shelf we needed to cover.  He found the perfect combination of sizes and because I wanted a uniform color/look, I ordered light brown plates directly from Lego.

To find out the part numbers, I used BrickOwl.com and called Lego directly to place my order.  The customer service at Lego is super friendly and very helpful.  You will want to connect with their Pick a Brick store.

Identifying and ordering your bricks early on is important because the bricks will ship from Denmark and take 7-10 business days to reach you in the States.

The next step is to prepare your display.  I wanted a darker brown look so I used Waverly Truffle Chalk Paint and their Antique Wax.  (The Waverly wax goes on more like paint than Annie Sloan’s wax.)

DIY Lego Mini-Figure Display - Painting

Before using Gorilla Glue to attach the Legos to the display, you will need to sand.  Follow all directions on the glue.

Line up all your Legos so they are ready to go and find a safe place to start gluing.  I don’t know what I was thinking…using the glue in the new family room with only a little cardboard.  But it worked out okay, thankfully.

I worked with one shelf at a time so that I could fill it with dominoes and let it set for a few hours.

Once your display is dry, start adding mini-figures.

How to Make a Serving Tray that will Score at Your Football Party

How to Make a Serving Tray that will Score at Your Football Party - DIY tutorial

If you love entertaining, unique serving pieces and vintage-looking decor, you will LOVE this tutorial on how to make a serving tray that looks like an old football scoreboard.  It is the perfect DIY for a fun football party.  Add some great drinks and snacks (like Coca-Cola and RITZ® Crackers), and you’ll be ready to score with your biggest fans.

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (53)

Here is What You’ll Need to ‘Take it to the House’:

  • wood board cut to 14″ x 21″
  • scrap cardboard for staining and painting
  • stain, brush and rag
  • black spray paint
  • white acrylic paint with a small brush
  • printer and paper
  • chalk
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • hand-sander (or sanding blocks) with fine sandpaper
  • clear spray paint
  • 2 handles
  • 4 felt pads (the kind that protect hard floors)

How to Make A Scoring Serving Tray:

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (11)

Start your project by staining the wood.  Because the vintage serving tray should have an aged look, you won’t want fresh, light wood showing through after you sand and distress.

Pick a stain color that is a nice medium brown and when you expose the wood underneath, it will look years old and not like you just bought it at the hardware store.  Brush on your stain and then use a rag to wipe it off.  Allow the stain to dry completely before moving on to paint.

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (9)

Next, add a couple coats of black spray paint.  Follow the instructions on the can and be sure that the board is well covered.

Now, you’re ready to print off this text template.

Cut out the words and numbers and begin to place them on your wood board.

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (13)

Once you have everything in place, use chalk to mark the four sides of each paper.  You’ll be glad you did this later.

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (15)

Now, the fun part.  Flip over the text and color with chalk.  Cover each letter entirely, but pay particular attention to getting a good coat of chalk on the letter outlines.  The chalk will serve as a guide for painting later on.

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (29)

Place your text back in its place on the board and trace over the letters with a pencil.  Be sure to trace within the black ink of the text.

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (16)

Finish the word completely, then . . .

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (17)

Isn’t that worthy of a cheer?  Next, you’ll grab your acrylic paint and fill in the chalk letters.  If you make a mistake, a moist paper towel will do the trick.

In this way, work down the entire board, chalking and painting one line at a time to prevent smudging.

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (21)

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (22)

Great!  Your scoreboard looks complete.  But it looks . . . way too new.  With sanding blocks or more favorably, a hand sander (with fine grade sandpaper), distress your serving tray by sanding off some areas of paint.  This part comes down to personal preference.  How much would you like to wear off?

Be sure to sand all the edges to show wear.  Can you see your beautiful stain coming through?

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (23)

Then with a clear coat of spray paint, put a finish coat over the serving tray.  We are almost done!

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (26)

Measure the holes on the hardware to find out how far apart you need to drill your holes.  Most are 3″, however, the black pulls I bought were 3 3/4″.  Once you have the handles where you would like them, mark the holes to drill.  Double check your measurements to be sure that both sides will match when complete.

My husband braved the cold weather to drill the holes for me.  Isn’t he sweet?

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (27b)

With holes now drilled, you can put in your handles.  I loved these black handles, but keep in mind, you can pick whatever style you like!

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (34)

Don’t forget to adhere felt pads to the bottom of your serving tray.  We don’t want your table getting scratched.  I used a big size (only because we have 3-million of them from the move and new wood floor).

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (32)

Now, you’re ready to get the party started!

how to make a serving tray that will score at your football party (51)

When I was at Walmart, I picked up Coke Zero and RITZ® Crackers.  They’re great staples for a fun and easy party.  I was thrilled when I found the Coca-Cola 6-packs (500ml), 2 for $5!

And doesn’t everything look fantastic with the serving tray?

My canapes couldn’t have been simpler.  I took a RITZ® Cracker, topped it with breakfast sausage, melted sharp cheddar cheese and a few thinly sliced green onions.  They were delicious . . . touchdown!

Winter is here.  In Ohio, we experienced quite a mild December.  I have to say, it was lovely.  But with the New Year came the cold temperatures and the chill has left me pining for the warmer weather of the south (not to mention losing the scarves, gloves, hats, boots, snowpants and thick coats needed for outdoor recess – a’hem).

DIY Tissue Paper Garland

DIY Tissue Paper Garland - Full & Fringy!

When I was getting ready for our DIY Kool-Aid Drink Station, I wanted a full and fringy garland to hang across the table backdrop.  I searched the stores for crepe paper rolls (not streamers), but had no luck.  So I decided to try some tissue paper and I was quite pleased with how it turned out.

This tissue paper garland is perfect for a backdrop or projects that are short in length.  I am not sure I’d use it for streamers across the whole room.  That would be a lot of work.  Also, one side of this garland is flat, but that can easily be corrected fluffy toward the back and also by twisting the garland from end to end.

All you need is:  a stapler, scissors and tissue paper.  Depending on the size of your tissue paper, one sheet will yield approximately 2 feet of garland.

Fringy Streamers 1

How to Make DIY Tissue Paper Garland:

1.  Fold a single sheet of tissue paper in half.

Fringy Streamers 2

2.  Then fold it again.  However this time, depending on the length of your tissue paper, you will fold it in half or into thirds.  You want your final width to be about 3 inches.

Fringy Streamers 3

Fringy Garland 4

3.  Fold in half once more to create a center crease.

Fringy Garland 6

4.  Open the last fold and staple 3-4 times along this crease.

Fringy Garland 13

5a.  This is what I did the first time and it proved to take much longer than what I will show you with 5b and the red tissue paper.

But just in case you prefer this route:  Fold your tissue paper back in half so that the staples are on the end.  Cut slits into the tissue paper as shown below.

Fringy Garland 7

Then unfold the tissue paper and slit all the loops.

Fringy Garland 9

5b.  This way will save you time!  Before making the slits, cut and open up the sides.

Fringy Garland 12

Then fold the tissue paper back in half again and cut the slits.

Fringy Garland 14

6.  Fluff the garland with your fingers.

Fringy Garland 10

Squeeze the garland together, too.  This will help with fluffing.

Fringy Tissue Paper Garland

7.  Staple your various lengths of garland together to make one long piece.
