5 great places to find free local events

Just a few short weeks ago, we spent a wonderful afternoon decorating the kids’ bikes with patriotic garb, listening to family-friendly music, riding in a firetruck, eating ice cream and watching Sweet Boy participate in a pie eating contest.  It was July 4th and my community does a wonderful job of celebrating Old Glory Day.  And guess what?  It was all free!

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have family fun.  There is so much free fun to be had and chances are there are great activities in your very own community or one near by.

How to Find Free Local Events:

1.  Start with your City’s events page on their website.  My town does free Friday night Concerts in the Park, weekend events, fairs or shows, a Kidsfest and more.

2.  Stop by your Library and pick up an events schedule (or check their website).  Maybe your kids can catch a PJ story time or a fun class to learn something new.  I’ll be heading soon to hear a concert by Chip Richter at a local library and I can’t wait!

3.  Check your Local Park District newsletter or website for events.  I am amazed at the number of programs our park district offers throughout the year.  My kids love heading to programs for their age group with Miss Nora (the Explorer), but there are also many other events, classes and even concerts during the summer months.

4.  Go to Zvents.com.  Plug in your city and you’ll find a list of local events, covering a variety of interests.  I found everything from a free little train ride and festivals to nature center open houses.

5.  Download the free app, Gravy.   You can search events, customize your settings and even connect with Facebook.

Have fun!
