Last week, a very exciting package arrived on my doorstep. The Silhouette Cameo Electronic Cutting Tool entered my life. Have you heard of the Cricut Expression? It is a very cool machine that will cut designs, shapes, letters, vinyl . . . you name it. It is a crafter’s dream! I have been wanting one for a few months and finally told Dan about my new wishlist item.
But in sharing about the features, he encouraged me to keep searching around. He thought there had to be a product that allowed for more flexibility, customization and hooked up to my computer. And guess what? A’hem….he.was.right.
After comparing prices and doing my research, I bought the Silhouette Cameo from Amazon. I completely splurged (not something I do often!). But between Amazon codes from taking surveys (I’ll share next week), Ebay sales and a roll-top desk I sold, I had the entire purchase price covered. Woot!
The Silhouette Cameo hooks up to my computer, allows me to use any font on my computer and create any shape I want. With the Cricut, you have to buy cartridges, sometimes costing $30-$40, even if you only need one of the shapes on the cartridge.
With the Silhouette Cameo, you download the software and then access their site to purchase designs for usually 99 cents each. Did I mention that a $10 Download Card came with Cameo? If you want to get crazy designing and crafting, they also offer subscription services, allowing you at the premium level to get 150 designs for $20/month.
Here are a couple of the first things I have made:
Do you have a Silhouette Cameo or Cricut? Tell us what you think!
Update: Check out these new products for the Cameo. (You’ll be able to make your own magnets, stickers and more!)

Having been a subscriber to your blog, I was thinking that this is just what you needed! I met you at the Health Fair and wanted to mention it to you! You are going to LOVE it!! I have a Cricut Expression (and the baby bug too), but you’ve made the right choice. I use Make-the-Cut software. It’s awesome! However, there was a lawsuit and it is no longer possible to update my Cricut or I’ll lose the ability to use MTC. But I’ve made many cool things! Check out my blog: http://www.alices1derland.blogspot.com/ (although, I haven’t updated it in a LONG time)! There are quite a few fun things on there! Good luck and have fun creating!!
I am so glad you posted this, because I’ve had my eye on this! It’s always great to get a first-hand account from someone that has used one, so thanks! Your projects turned out so cute.
I’m also just checking to make sure your Reply to comment feature is working – it looks like it on my end, but let me know if you have any problems with it. Thanks!!
Jackie, it worked! Thank you so much. Would you let me know if you get an email with this reply? I am assuming it just is a posting.
I didn’t get an email, just popped back in here to check for your reply. 🙂
I have a Cricut Expression and use the SCAL software which works fine, but as 1derland said I can’t update my Cricut because I won’t be able to use the SCAL anymore. Also, I seem to have a lot of trouble cutting thin and intricate things with the Cricut. After trying to cut some small letters for my daughter’s school project a couple of weeks ago and almost throwing the Cricut out the window I decided to get the Silhouette Cameo. My Cameo is coming tomorrow! I’ve been taking the online card class called A Cut Above and the second half focuses on the Silhouette. I’ve been able to keep up with the projects using my Cricut, but from all the video lessons in the class I know I’ll like the Silhouette better. I’ve got some of those projects on my blog if you want to see what the class is (It’s still available to take as it’s self-paced) http://www.cassie-d.blogspot.com
I’m really interested in the Amazon surveys you mentioned.
OK, I want one now… I’m seen them around so much lately and am dreaming up all the things I could use it for… 🙂

Hi Janet, sorry for the delay in responding. I was on vacation and having trouble with my mobile app. I don’t know about your question, but I have always found the Silhouette America customer service great to deal with. When you’re at their site, just click on support. They should be able to help you. I would imagine you can just use your credit card and that would convert for you. Good luck!
