Simple Way #24

When was the last time you blew bubbles?  Maybe last summer?  For me, it was Sunday in the Toddler Room at Church.  It is amazing how bubbles can appease an upset toddler.

Today’s task is definitely on the simple side, but sure to delight your kids.  Our task for today is to enjoy the simple pleasure of blowing bubbles . . . inside or outside.

A couple weeks ago, we went to the Science Center and saw a Bubble Show.  The man took household items and blew bubbles with them.  He took a berry pint container, the top half of a two liter pop bottle, a slinky, a pvc pipe, the top half of a bleach bottle, a pop can with a nail hole in the bottom . . . so many different items . . . even his hands.  It was fascinating and fun.

The Bubble Man made small bubbles, giant bubbles, bubbles inside of bubbles . . . always pointing out that no matter what shape you used to make the bubble, it would always come out as a sphere.  So grab one of the containers of bubbles lining the shelves in your garage (one of many if you’re like me) and bring ’em in.  If you’d like to make your own mix, here is the recipe our Science Center hands out.

DIY Bubble Formula
1 gallon water
1/2 cup Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (regular Dawn works best)
1/4 cup glycerin (OPTIONAL; found in skin care section of most pharmacies)

* Slowly mix all ingredients to avoid forming lots of foam.  Store in a clean, sealed container.  Let solution stand over night.  The Bubble Man told us that it will work best when at least a day old.  And just so you know, it will start to smell rancid when it is too old.

Be a kid at heart and have fun today.  And don’t miss the opportunity to talk about shapes, colors and sizes with your kids.

31 Simple Ways to Celebrate Today is a series designed to help you laugh a little more, act with others in mind and even enjoy a little silliness . . . and most definitely, to cause you to break from the busyness of your life with intentional little moments of fun.
