Last week, a very exciting package arrived on my doorstep.  The  Silhouette Cameo Electronic Cutting Tool entered my life.  Have you heard of the Cricut Expression?  It is a very cool machine that will cut designs, shapes, letters, vinyl . . . you name it.  It is a crafter’s dream!  I have been wanting one for a few months and finally told Dan about my new wishlist item.

But in sharing about the features, he encouraged me to keep searching around.  He thought there had to be a product that allowed for more flexibility, customization and hooked up to my computer.  And guess what?  A’hem….he.was.right.

After comparing prices and doing my research, I bought the Silhouette Cameo from Amazon.  I completely splurged (not something I do often!).  But between Amazon codes from taking surveys (I’ll share next week), Ebay sales and a roll-top desk I sold, I had the entire purchase price covered.  Woot!

The  Silhouette Cameo hooks up to my computer, allows me to use any font on my computer and create any shape I want.  With the Cricut, you have to buy cartridges, sometimes costing $30-$40, even if you only need one of the shapes on the cartridge.

With the Silhouette Cameo, you download the software and then access their site to purchase designs for usually 99 cents each.  Did I mention that a $10 Download Card came with Cameo?  If you want to get crazy designing and crafting, they also offer subscription services, allowing you at the premium level to get 150 designs for $20/month.

Here are a couple of the first things I have made:

For the framed Scripture verse, I bought a butterfly card design (99 cents!), manipulated it for the frame and cut the text in a font on my computer downloaded for free from Fonts 101.  The box on the left has a train shape on top (hard to see in the picture) but it is adorable and perfect for a train party favor.  The bag design on the top right was one of the 50 free designs that come with the software.
I can not wait to start some party planning and designing with this machine!

Do you have a Silhouette Cameo or Cricut?  Tell us what you think!

Update:  Check out these new products for the Cameo.  (You’ll be able to make your own magnets, stickers and more!)
